Where I Began With My Online Business
My name is Barry Callister. I am a Nature Photographer currently residing on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales in Australia.
How I started my online business was the same way as many photographers do I guess. I began by sharing photos on social media, trying to create enough interest to get people to either buy them, or hire me to take photos for them.
I built a website with an online store and uploaded random photos and products that I thought would sell. Years later and I had sold a few things but nowhere near enough to consider this a “business”.
Had I known then what I know now, things would be very different.
No Business Plan – No Business Success
You hear this all the time – “you have to have a plan if you want to succeed”.
I believe this is true. However, I also believe that you need to have the right knowledge in order to make that plan succeed. In the same way that you can’t build a house without hammer and nails, you can’t build an online business without the right tools either.
This was what was missing from my business. I really had no idea how to market my products online. I had just been throwing paint at the wall and hoping it would stick.
My photos and products were not selling because I had not done my research. I had not clearly defined my target market or what they were looking for. In addition to this, I had no idea of where my customers were?! If I didn’t know where they were hanging out online, how was I going to get my products in front of them?
